Dolphin Smart Hal is designed for Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones. Check the list of Smart Hal Compatible Smartphones on www.YourDolphin.com.
When Smart Hal is installed, a complete user guide is made available on your PC from: Start > All Programs > Dolphin Mobile > Smart Hal > Hal Help.
Install and Start-up
Download Smart Hal to a PC running Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista. Active Sync or Mobile Device Center must be installed on the PC. First connect your Smartphone to the PC via USB cable and make sure there is an active connection before installing Smart Hal. When the installation process is complete the USB cable may be disconnected.
Smart Hal runs automatically each time the Smart phone is switched on. Smart Hal plays a musical sound during start-up. Smart Hal will speak any Smartphone start-up error messages such as "Missing or invalid SIM card" automatically.
Smart Hal Hot Keys
When Smart Hal is running, the Smartphone "Home" key becomes the "DOLPHIN" key. Pressing the DOLPHIN Key (Home) once will activate Smart Hal’s hot keys. Pressing it twice returns you to the Smartphone Home screen.
The only exception to this is RIGHTSOFT (when phone is ringing) which reads the incoming caller's ID.
To use any of the other hot keys, press the DOLPHIN KEY (DK) once followed by:
STAR to read a list of all hotkeys

Quit Smart Hal
To quit Smart Hal, press Dolphin Key followed by 1 to open the Smart Hal control panel. Open the context menu with the RIGHTSOFT key and select the option to Quit.
Smart Hal Control Panel
Many of the Smart Hal settings can be controlled using Smart Hal's hot keys, see above. Additional settings can be controlled from the Smart Hal control panel accessed with the DOLPHINKEY followed by 1.
Soft Keys
Soft Key labels are context sensitive and change according to the application or setting you are in. Smart Hal will automatically announce the soft key assignments each time they change. For example on the Home screen, you will hear “Leftsoft Start, Rightsoft Contacts.” If you then press the RIGHTSOFT button to access Contacts you will hear “Leftsoft New, Rightsoft Menu”. To turn off automatic Soft Key announcement, turn off Monitor Markers with Dolphin Key > 1 Control Panel > 2 Announce Menu > Monitor Markers.
Call and message status
When browsing the recent calls list Smart Hal will report whether a call has been missed, received or dialled. Additionally Smart Hal will indicate when an SMS or Email is unread.
Subsequent presses of the keys to read: character, word and line, will provide additional information about those elements. For example press DOLPHIN KEY RIGHT twice will spell the currently selected word - particularly useful when reading and writing text messages.
SMS text options
SMS text input can be in T9 predictive text mode or ABC multipress mode. Using the ABC method, Smart Hal will beep when the Smartphone cursor is ready for the next character. E.g. to write "hi" press 4 twice for the letter "h". Smart Hal will beep to confirm that "h" has been accepted and the cursor is ready. Press 4 another three times for "i" and Smart Hal will confirm with a beep when "i" has been accepted.
With T9 predictive text input, Smart Hal will attempt to pronounce the word which is currently being predicted. For example 4 6 6 3 will usually predict "home". If you actually wanted another word such as "good" or "gone", use DOWN to choose from the list of alternatives.
