The NHS Accessible Information has been in planning and development stages for a long time, with NHS healthcare providers being given over a year to take steps towards compliancy. It came into effect on 31st July, and must now be adhered to across England.

Why is the Standard so important?

It's not just about making sure people have access to the right information regarding their medical needs.

It's about independence, inclusion and equality.

Whilst the Standard applies across all publicly funded health and care organisations in England, and should now be adhered to across the board, we're sure there are still many organisations who aren't fully compliant. Perhaps they can provide large print leaflets but not braille, for example.

As a service user - be that a patient or carer of a patient - you are entitled to request NHS communications in your preferred format. The organisation must be able to provide that format to you.

The RNIB have launched a "Need it to Read it" toolkit to help NHS service users request their preferred communication method. This includes a downloadable template to complete and give to your GP or healthcare provider. You can find more information and links on the RNIB website.
