NB: Please note that product names in this article may have changed since the time of writing.
Windows 10 comes with a new default web browser called Microsoft Edge. This browser is also the default PDF Reader for Windows 10. At the moment, Microsoft Edge does not render documents in an accessible form. This means that SuperNova and, at the time of this article’s publication, all other Assistive Technology companies are unable to display content in the browser window in an accessible way. Microsoft is working on a framework to provide accessibility to Microsoft Edge in the future.
Until a resolution is available, it is recommended that you use one of the following methods to read PDF documents:
- Acrobat Reader DC (desktop edition)
- SuperNova Bookshelf Reader
Acrobat Reader DC
You can download Acrobat Reader DC from Adobe.com.( The installation of Acrobat Reader DC will make this program the default PDF reader in Windows 10. This means shortcuts to PDF documents will open in Acrobat Reader DC and not Microsoft Edge.
TIP: When you first run Adobe Acrobat Reader DC the Accessibility Setup Assistant appears. It is recommended that you go through this wizard and deselect “Display PDF documents in the web browser” check box to ensure you always open PDF documents in this program. You can find this option on the last page of the setup wizard.
SuperNova Bookshelf Reader
If you are using SuperNova Access Suite, Reader magnifier or Screen Reader and if you only open PDF documents you save on your computer then using SuperNova Bookshelf Reader to read PDF documents could provide a simple and straight forward solution. You can learn more about Bookshelf Reader by reviewing the Bookshelf chapter in the SuperNova Manual. You can access the manual through the “Help” menu in the SuperNova Control Panel.
